Abstract
Engaging with 19th century writing is often a challenge for high school students. This lesson plan gives an overview of how to invite students into “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe and achieve buy in. Utilizing close reading, art, and acting, the lesson plan is student focused and connects with many literary elements. An emphasis on atmosphere allows students to better understand symbolism and overall themes within the text. The lesson includes a graphic organizer and a prompt for a summative assessment. All objectives as based on the Ohio Department of Education English Language Arts Standards.
