2018: Powerful Dialogue – Engaging Community Issues in Polarizing Times
Presentation Title
Making the Leap: Student Historians’ Engagement with Small Museums and Historical Societies
Keywords
community engaged scholarship, leadership, tools, cultural heritage institutions
Description
A great deal of the material culture that historians and other practitioners rely on for their work is stored and cared for in small museums and historical societies across the nation. This is especially true in Kansas with more than 100 of these small non-profit organizations working hard to help communities remember who they are as they build new pathways for sustainability into the future. With over 100 project partners over a decade, the Chapman Center for Rural Studies has developed a set of questions and tools that bring undergraduate students together with community members interested in preserving their history.
