Healthy Food Financing in Rural Communities: Challenges and Opportunities
Keywords
Food access, Marketing grocery stores, Financing store operations, Policy options to promote and sustain grocery operations
Description
In this presentation, The Food Trust partners with one of our partners in the nonprofit financial sector to present the healthy food financing model along with case studies that illustrate how financing programs such as the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) and corner store initiatives can help support both new store development as well as infrastructure improvement and expansion in diverse food retailers, including the types of convenience stores and smaller markets prevalent in many rural communities.
In addition, we describe some of The Food Trust’s recent work supporting healthy small store programs in rural communities. We explain how rural projects can take advantage of the national HFFI program, which has now been included in the recent Farm Bill just enacted by Congress. Finally, we conclude with a facilitated discussion among all panelists regarding some of the common challenges and opportunities for making healthy food more accessible in rural small stores.
