Presentation Title

Painting the Picture of Community Engagement and Democracy – Stories from Kansas Communities

Keywords

civic engagement, community development, immigration

Description

Supporting civic action is a key function of those within the University community. When we engage in conversations among citizens to identify community-wide issues, develop plans to address them and collaborate on implementing solutions, the impacts are noteworthy. This session highlights the efforts of faculty who have dedicated their time to effect positive change with community partners. K-State Research and Extension works with the Douglas County Food Policy Council to advise elected officials on food-related policy issues and provide a community forum for local food system development. TALK Salina has had impacts with its community conversations on Salina, the most recent resulting from deliberating the topic "Coming to America. Who Should We Welcome? What Should We Do?". Julie Bretado, USD 305 Heartland Program and Julia Ramos, City of Salina Community Relations, tell the story of the One Salina welcoming project that resulted. Projects like these can be replicated in other communities.
