Presentation Title

Veterinary Student ROLE Models Bring STEM to Disadvantaged Kids,

Keywords

community engagement; youth after-school programs, STEM

Description

The goal of this session is to describe the mission of our “This is How We ROLE” program and how it has been successful to engage and benefit KSU veterinary students, kids and families in our community, and our veterinary profession as a whole. This program, which was started at Purdue University and is now joined by 19 veterinary schools, involves a team of veterinary students, a faculty leader, and a collaborating after-school program in the community that serves kids who are educationally disadvantaged due to socioeconomic status, race, or ethnicity. Our veterinary students act as role models for K-4th grade kids, teaching them veterinary and One Health STEM lessons, and encouraging them to attend college and hopefully enter and diversify the veterinary profession. In 2018 we established a collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club of Manhattan, and we have been “ROLEing” on Friday afternoons ever since. This session will discuss the NIH funding, training, and collaboration among various veterinary schools involved to help get this program off the ground and be a success. It will also discuss the lessons we teach and the various challenges encountered along the way with implementation. This program has been highly successful based on feedback from kids and parents, but I will also discuss the many benefits to our veterinary students, including improving teaching skills, gaining cultural respect and humility, and acquiring the tools and inspiration to become leaders of similar community engagement programs across Kansas and the country after graduation from KSU.
